Why get a skin cancer check?

Melanoma is a dangerous cancer that kills nearly two thousand Australians every year. If caught early though, most melanoma deaths can be prevented. Regular skin cancer checks by an appropriately trained doctor are the best way to find an early melanoma that might otherwise remain undetected.

Some other skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are much more common than melanoma. Whilst not as dangerous as melanoma, it is important to realise that these are potentially life-threatening as well if left untreated. 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer before the age of seventy.

Regular checks can detect pre-cancerous changes, such as solar keratoses, that are caused by sun damage. These can be easily treated non-surgically before they turn into skin cancer.

If you’ve not had a skin cancer check in the last twelve months, now would be a good time for one. If you’ve had skin cancer before, especially if it was a melanoma, more frequent skin cancer checks might be appropriate.

Why choose remedy+ for your skin check?

Dr Masi has had extensive training in skin cancer medicine and decades of experience working in a skin cancer clinic. We take advantage of the latest developments in skin cancer detection. For example, we encourage our patients to have digital images taken of any significant moles. If you have numerous moles, we take systematic full-body images.

These images by themselves are not useful in making a diagnosis of skin cancer (that’s our doctor’s job). When a series of images is taken over time though, the subtle changes of an early melanoma can be detected sooner than otherwise possible.

Our software can compare images, and aid our doctor in identifying any moles that are new or changing
